Oh how the right tool for the job can make the mundane, redundant chores of life almost a pleasure! I believe this fabric is what is called 'birds eye' cotton and these look just like the 'baby diapers' I used years ago. Those well outlasted their original purpose and continued to hold up for years re-purposed as cleaning and polishing cloths, tack cloths for painting and refinishing, dish towels, lunch napkins... When they eventually wore out, the disposable diaper market had hit full tilt and I couldn't find these anywhere. Younger clerks in the stores had no idea what I was even asking about! Though the birds eye cotton seems to be making a come back with new mothers now, the diapers I've found in this cotton weave all seem to be pre-folded with a thick, multi-layered center. Instead, these are a single, uniform layer that is better when used as toweling (and more versatile for different folding patterns as diapers). All but a couple (still very usable) in the pack I received were cut to a consistent size and shape and all are very well hemmed. Though I recalled the good absorbability, lint free finish and durability of this weave, what I had forgotten was how easily stains and debris wash out. On closer look, the weave really is ingenious as the tightly locked, alternating clusters of long, thus durable and low lint, threads are just long enough to trap particles as they are wicked up in water - and likewise just loose enough that another swish in water releases them. Now I understand why I was never content with terry cloth and other weaves for some uses - they just can't perform the same way. I'm so glad I found these.
